Low NEET Score is Not the End

Every year, over 24 lakh students appear for NEET, and only a fraction get MBBS seats in government colleges. If your NEET score is low, it can feel devastating. But there are still multiple pathways to become a doctor. Here are your best options.

Option 1: MBBS Abroad

This is the most popular option for students with low NEET scores. You need to have qualified NEET (scored above the cutoff percentile), but you do not need a high rank.

Best countries for low NEET scores:

  • Russia: ₹15–50 lakh total cost, NMC recognized
  • Uzbekistan: ₹18–27 lakh, milder climate
  • Kazakhstan: ₹21–30 lakh, established Indian community
  • Philippines: ₹20–30 lakh, English-speaking country
  • Georgia: ₹25–35 lakh, European education system

**Key requirement:** You must have qualified NEET (even with a low score) to be eligible for MBBS abroad and to practice in India later.

Option 2: Deemed Universities

Deemed universities in India have management quota seats that do not require a very high NEET rank. However, the fees are high — typically ₹20–40 lakh per year.

Top deemed universities:

  • Kasturba Medical College (Manipal)
  • JSS Medical College (Mysore)
  • Sri Ramachandra Medical College (Chennai)
  • D.Y. Patil Medical College (Pune)

**Note:** Deemed university fees are much higher than MBBS abroad. Compare the total cost before deciding.

Option 3: Management Quota in Private Colleges

Many private medical colleges reserve 15–25% of seats under management quota. Admission is based on NEET score but the cutoff is significantly lower than government seats.

  • Fees: ₹15–25 lakh per year
  • NEET score required: Lower than government cutoff
  • Process: Through state counselling or direct application

Option 4: State Quota with Low Cutoffs

Some states have lower NEET cutoffs for their state quota seats. If you have domicile in these states, you may get a government seat with a lower score.

States with relatively lower cutoffs:

  • Bihar (state quota)
  • Uttar Pradesh (state quota)
  • Rajasthan (state quota)
  • Madhya Pradesh (state quota)

**Tip:** Always participate in all rounds of counselling, including mop-up and stray vacancy rounds. Many seats open up in later rounds.

Option 5: Alternative Medical Courses

If MBBS is not possible, consider these alternative medical and paramedical courses:

  • BDS (Dental): Lower cutoff than MBBS, still a dental surgeon
  • BAMS (Ayurveda): Growing demand, government jobs available
  • BHMS (Homeopathy): Alternative medicine career
  • BVSc (Veterinary): Animal healthcare, growing field
  • B.Pharma: Pharmaceutical industry, wide career scope
  • BSc Nursing: High demand in India and abroad
  • Paramedical courses: Radiology, physiotherapy, lab technology
